Writing a paper at 2:27 AM: how an AI response conflated two Derek Walcott texts, and why cross-checking matters when researching Caribbean and world literature.

What did not work?

AI got the source of the poem confused. In addition it assigned that poem's imagery and themes into its answers. AI identified the source as "Love After Love," another Walcott poem. This mistake can affect biographical context. A tired at 2:30 AM, will likely accept that everything here is the truth and will proceed with the discussion paper. It turns out the poem is part of a book-length poem The Prodigal by Walcott. "The day, with all its pain ahead, is yours" is a passage from Part II, Chapter 9, Section 3 of the poem.

WHAT TO DO

Make this a habit. Treat this first result in AI as only a lead. Challenge the AI by drilling down on your questions and verify the verified sources. Derek Walcott is an internationally known poet appearing in Norton Anthologies on every college library and bookstore and yet AI conflated two of his poems and misidentified the source. Imagine what AI can do to the works of lesser known authors. The polished AI response can be  a distraction and obscure the language and cultural context of texts that are not in the literary canon. Cross check, cross check, cross check.

AI Response

About the poem (a gentle clarification)

The line “The day, with all its pain ahead, is yours.” comes from “Love After Love”, one of the most widely read poems by Derek Walcott.
Readers often remember this line so vividly that it feels like a title in itself — which is fitting, because the poem is about reclaiming ownership of one’s life.

What follows is an interpretive tour of the poem, with special attention to that line.

Curatorial Introduction

“Love After Love” is a poem of return — not to a place, but to the self.
Written from the perspective of later life and hard-earned wisdom, it speaks to anyone who has given themselves away: to love, to duty, to survival, to history.

Walcott, a Caribbean poet shaped by colonial inheritance, exile, and racial fragmentation, understood identity as something often fractured. This poem imagines healing not as romance, but as recognition.

Reading the Key Line

“The day, with all its pain ahead, is yours.”

This is not false comfort. Walcott does not promise ease, happiness, or redemption.

Instead, he offers ownership.

• “The day” — ordinary, unavoidable, unglamorous life

• “with all its pain ahead” — suffering is acknowledged, not denied

• “is yours” — the radical claim: your life belongs to you again

After years of living for others — lovers, empires, expectations — the speaker declares a quiet revolution: self-possession.

This line arrives after the poem has already instructed the reader to:

• greet themselves “arriving at your own door”

• give back their heart “to itself”

• sit and feast on their own life

The pain does not disappear. What changes is who holds it.

What Type of Poem Is This?

Genre & Form

• Lyric poem — intimate, reflective, addressed directly to “you”

• Free verse — no fixed rhyme or meter; conversational and ceremonial

• Second-person address — creates the feeling of a blessing or invocation

Literary & Cultural Classification

• Postcolonial Caribbean poetry

• Poem of self-reclamation / self-love (but not in a shallow sense)

• Wisdom poem of later life

• Ritual / homecoming poem

This is not a confessional poem of pain, nor a romantic poem of desire.
It is a ceremonial poem — almost liturgical — marking a rite of return.

Cultural & Emotional Context

Walcott’s work often explores:

• divided identity

• colonial inheritance

• exile and return

• the cost of survival

In “Love After Love,” these vast histories are distilled into a single human truth:
You have been a stranger to yourself — and now you are coming home.

The Caribbean context matters here. For people shaped by displacement — enslaved, colonized, migrated — self-recognition itself becomes political. To claim your life as “yours” is an act of resistance.

Why This Poem Endures

This poem endures because it:

• speaks gently without sentimentality

• honors pain without glorifying it

• imagines healing as attention, not erasure

• offers a future that is honest, not idealized

It is often read at moments of transition — divorce, recovery, aging, grief — because it does not ask us to become someone new. It asks us to recognize who we already are.

A Closing Reflection

Walcott does not say:

The day will be easy.

He says:

The day is yours.

And in a world that so often claims our time, labor, bodies, and hearts — that may be the most generous promise poetry can make.

If you’d like, I can:

• walk you through the poem line by line

• compare it with other Caribbean poems of return

• or place it alongside poems about self-repair and survival

Just tell me where you’d like to continue the tour.
